About

Yangge (秧歌, "rice sprout song") is a form of Chinese folk dance. English Wikipedia traces roots in Song-dynasty rural performance and later political adaptations, especially popular in northern China; the square dancing (China) article connects mid-twentieth-century urban encounters with yangge to the social history that later surrounded modern guangchangwu.

Yangge is included here as a lineage and contrast — not as a synonym for guangchangwu. Sources describe influence and historical connection; they do not equate the two practices. Deep historical dating rests on reference-tier English Wikipedia material and is attributed as such.
